i'm sick of buying feeders 3 times a week. i want to breed feeders, but is it worth my time? should i breed something like guppies or mollies, or something like convicts that breed like crazy. any help would be awesome. thanks.

To keep up with the amount of feeders it looks like your using, you would need a room and many tanks to supply that kind of demand. One 20gal tank would never keep up. Even though guppies and convicts breed like crazy it would still be a few months from the time they breed til the fry would even be able to be feed. During this grow out time you would still be buying feeders. On top of that expense you would need to be feeding the breeder, changing water, changing filters, ect ect.

Your best option would be to ween your fish off of feeders. There are so many fish food made now that you should be able to find one they would eat. When you get them on a prepared food you could go and buy some feeders every once in a while for a treat, or use the ones that you have breed.

Feeder fish should be avoided to prevent the transmittal of disease and parasites. Livebearer fish are perhaps a better alternative such as swordtails, platies, etc.

I'm guessing you're referring to the Gar as the consumer of the feeders....

It might be hard to do, but you might successfully wean him. The trouble with feeders is the risk of disease, as mentioned.

The thing with breeding your own is that you would want to keep them in ideal conditions for faster growth, plus the fact that you don't want to feed your fish nasty food and make him sick... Lots of work, but after an experience I had years ago with feeders, I consider it to be well worth the effort.

My live food eaters are small enough that I can feed them Ghost Shrimp, which from all I have found is safer. Plus they readily gobble frozen foods as well. This may not be an option for your fish though, I'm not that up on Gars and their dietary needs.

i heard it's better to make carnivore fish eat pellets...

wow, your avatar is scary lol.

i'd like one of THOSE any day! :D

I share tai95's concern. While livebearers do breed at a fast rate... you would really need something big to have a self-sustaining system regarding feeder fish. I have a pond full of swordtails breeding like crazy but if I totally depend on them for feeding 2 of my big cichlids I will totally deplete their population. It will help though in lessening the no. of times or the no. feeders you'd be buying. Good luck with whatever actions you take. :)
