Hi,
Try adding some Tanganyikan salts & buffers. This will help with the pollution. Also adding Sodium Chloride (not table salt but pool salt) will get rid of the Ich. A regular dose of salt will dehydrate the free swimming Ich organism. Repeated addition of small amounts of these salts will eliminate Ich & your Rainbows will be healthier than ever & your water quality will improve.
Rainbows WQ- pH 8.0 - 8.8, KH 200 ppm. Temp. 24 - 28 C.

Hi,
Not exactly sure of why? Although pH < 7 is more unstable and harder to manage. I also have read that the Nitrosomonas & the Nitro Bacti function better at slightly alkaline pH. The higher pH can also help with the mucous coating of the certain spp. of fish.
