I got a ramshorn snail Wednesday and put it in my 31 gallon with my platies. By Thursday, he was gone. I checked in and under the "logs" and plants, and in the filter. He must have crawled out and went for a stroll. Which reminds me to get a full test done on my tap water. Within the last year or so, snails seem to like crawling out of my water. Must be something in there they don't like. However the fish seem to have no complaints, I couldn't ask for any more colorful and active.

I'm thinking it might be heavy metals in the tap water. I don't usually use water conditioner because I am on a well, but a few days ago I bought a bottle of tetra aquasafe just to give it a try. I put some in and noticed that the snails did not go above the water line on that tank the next day, and I haven't seen one above the water line since. In my platy tank however I didn't put any aquasafe in until I put the snail in (I didn't plan on putting him in that tank to start with) and I'm thinking it didn't have enough time to detoxify the heavy metals before they irritated him and he climbed out. This is all just a theory however, I guess I will know when I get a full test done on the tap.

check around your fishtank. they often just plop off the side and end up under the stand or something. it's most likely still alive, as they can survive something like 2 weeks out of water. (don't know the exact time for sure) and most often when something is amiss with the water, they just clam up in their shells.

I checked all around outside of the tank, no sign of him though. I'm almost 100% certain that he is not in the tank, when I did a water change yesterday I checked in everything, including the filter (which had a couple other snails that I didn't know I had, and as often as I rinse out my media it's a wonder I didn't notice them before...).

He made an appearance today, in the tank. So he didn't crawl out after all. Hoever he is above the water line. I need to find out what is in our water that snails don't like. If they don't like it, it might not be good for people to drink.
