View Full Version : Two Gold Sevs in a 55?

My sister currently has a 55 with a few fancy goldfish. Long story short, I gave her this 55 so my niece could have my grandmothers old fish(one of the goldfish in the tank now). My grandmother passed away in march so the one had a lot of sentimental value. Well he has had a swim bladder problem for a while now(we tried peas but nothing is making him any better). So anyway I fully expect her to tell me that he is belly up when she gets home today.

So anyway, what I was think was getting two Gold Sevs for the tank since my niece is only 2 and if I get them at the same size she won't know any better. Now I've never kept Severums before but I'm assuming they are fairly hardy like most CA/SA's. I was also going to get a bristlenose or rubberlip pleco to go along with them. How does this whole thing sound to you guys/gals? Thanks in advance.

I should also note that I am the maintenance crew for this tank. I try to do water changes as often as possible but normally the best that I can do is once every three weeks.

Well I would say you could get away with two gold sev's and a smaller pleco in your tank but three week may let the nitrates build up to high when the fish get full grown. If you can find some one to do more water changes when the fish get older in a year then I would say your alright with your plan.

Any other suggestions? We are going to pick out the fish tomorrow and I would like to give her a few choices. What about a pair of GT's? m and f of course. Any suggestions at all?

The male gt is likely to get a little too large for the width of the tank. I guess you could do it, but I'd be more comfortable with a 75g (about 6" wider than a 55g). Do you really want to deal with breeding aggression and 100 fry every few weeks? Why not get a nice mix of smaller, calm cichlids instead? Lots to choose from, and many are colorful: firemouth, multispinosa, honduran red point, sajika, spinossisimus. You could have females of slightly larger species: nic, acara, severum. You could try a female salvini which would be a little more aggressive.

I'll keep all those in mind. You're right though. She doesn't need a breeding pair of anything! lol

well if you are thinking about getting something different now,try blue jack demseys very beautiful and alot more peaceful the the regular jack demseys.

I do like severums though too!

If you think electric blue dempseys are less aggressive than regular ones your wrong most people just keep them with less aggressive fish once they get big they are just as mean as anything I had 3 over 8" and they couldnt live with anything

No your wrong I have both myself and plenty of experience with them. They are still aggressive ,BUT NOT AS AGGRESSIVE AS THE REGULARS.
