Today I came home from work and found that one of my kuhli loaches had somehow gotten himself into the intake valve of the filter. He was the smallest one, but still, he would have had to try pretty hard to get in there. Anyway, he was a goner.

Any remedies for preventing something like this in the future? That kuhli was definitely the smallest, and they're the only species I've got that could get themselves in that predicament, so maybe I don't need to worry about the remaining three. But still...

what brand of filter do you have? i'm assuming its an H.O.B filter. try screening the filter intake off with pantyhose.

those are all excellent suggestions. Elongated loaches like kuhlis and dojos are notorious for being inquisitive and working their way into filters. In fact, I heard one lady say she lost her dojo for months or even a year! It turned out it had wormed under her undergravel filter plates and was living there and eating the gunk under there!

They are also great jumpers, so I might add that you should get a good canopy or screen off small openings with some screen mesh or pantyhose.

you can get a sponge that will fit over the filter

kuhlis are notorious for going up filter intakes, or down UG filter out puts.

I use an UG filter with two air stones. When I replace the carbon, which is when I do my bi-weekly water change, I pull the tubes and suck a few gallons of gunk out. Not to turn this into a UG filter thread, let's say 5 minutes of maintainence goes a long way to making them work... but my cory cats are prone to go down the hole while the tube is pulled out. About this time last year, I ended up pulling out all the gravel to lift the plates. all the other fish went into the 5.5 gallon quarentine tank. This is my 37 gallon, which has about 30-32" of fish in it. Putting them into the 5.5 was quite crowed, and they spent about an hour there with a corner filter.
I got the cory out. I had a small amount of filth on the bottom, but far less than I expected. I'm happy to say everyone survived that episode. Actually only one neon has died since then in that tank. I thought I was the only person that had a fish go down the UG spout!
