The pond with some Triops
ok... went over my friend's house... he apparently has NO CLUE about fishkeeping. so for 2 years, he became my fish apprentice lol. And I told him about the stuff from this forum. He has a 5 gallon bow and he had a koi in it, which sorta died :(. But It was pretty obvious that it was. So I volunteered to clean up his tank and this time start him on a nice tropical tank. I kept telling about his gravel (you can see black stuff under it...). So then the project started. His filter is running but it's a piece of crud (WOW ! A 5+ year old filter with no lid and no carbon or anything! Just fiber in it!).
but it's the gravel that got to me...

BUT...

after finishing the work, i found some nice plastic plants in his house and so I got a big plant in the back right, 2 mediums in the left (on in back, on in front)... it looks soo much cooler now! But I forgot to take the pic after... sry :(

btw, it's BARELY because it was so disgusting that i almost refused. then i thought about his little "training" from me lol.

sry... i'll try to get some tomorrow :)

he's starting out with zebra danios... he asked me how many.. And to tell you the truth, i really don't know. But I'm thinking 3...

Are't zebra danios a bit too big and fiesty for a 5 gal? I'm not sure, but i'd wait for someone with more expertise to pipe in... :dive2:

well, he's INSISTING on fishie cycle rather than bio-spira and such. (and I told him to stay away from the product "cycle" lol).

so i really don't know any other fish that can go in.

.........................................................

nope, still no clue :(

 I'm not sure either.... I know that I was told guppies, cories, tetras and a whole bunch of others were too big for my 5 gal...I have a 10 g now, and I'm still stuck as to what put in it.... but maybe Endler's? :D

5g is way to small for any danios, they are fast swimmers and tend to be quite hyper, basically they need more room. For a 5g you could try:

A few endlers live bearers
A trio of fancy guppys (all one sex)
A male betta, a small snail, and a couple shrimp

Those are just a couple ideas.....

zebra danios a big no-no. i wouldn't even put them in a 10G, they are just too hyperactive.

livebearers would overpopulate the tank very quickly.

what i would do as a beginner is to get the almost indestructible betta, a snail, and some shrimps. a few decor caves, a plastic plant here and there and it's an awesome tank.

i doubt they will buy a $15 bag of bacteria to achieve a cycled tank, so do a fishless cycle.

hmm... i'll tell him that... *calls with cell phone*

soo.... cycle with betta, snail, and some shrimp?
how many shrimp?
