View Full Version : Why do some of my plants have black hairy algae on them?

I recently added another light bulb to my tank(72), making it 160 watts with two 6500K bulbs and two 5000K bulbs. I noticed the other day that there is this black hair algae on my anacharis and this turquoise color on the stems of my red foxtail. Why is this? All the water parameters are fine, nothing has changed, just the addition of another bulb. I keep the lights on from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Why is this? Because you added more light.
Sometimes, if you change one parameter you have to make adjustments in the others to keep the balance. Tinker with it a little bit, adding a little here and there, and keep up with the water changes. You'll find the balance.

Must be getting ready to go through that "algae stage", NJDF. ;)..
that brush algae can be a real b*tch...try increasing your co2, or make a reactor(to improve absorbtion) and make sure your plants are getting all the nutrients they need...also, try adding more plants...anacharis is supposed to be one of the best algae fighting plants out there. Do you have any SAE? or a bristlenose?

I just got my order from big al's yesterday. I got a hagen CO2 bubble diffuser and some root tabs. I do have a bristlenose, along with a common pleco and a tiger pleco. They don't seem to be doing their job since there are a lot of little dots of algae on the front glass. If my lfs ever has otos, i will pick up a few.

plecos don't eat the hard green spot algae or BBA. Nothing really does. SAE help with BBA but even then have to be starving to do so.

I'm also fighting BBA in 2 of my tanks(one even has a SAE in it) I have found that if you keep on top of cuting out hte affected leaves and making sure you water is good then eentually it gets better. You can also try usign the bleach treatment on some of your hardier plants and decorations.

If you didn't get a few SAE's, get them soon... I also had a bit more algae then I expected and what a difference the "real SAE's" made...! I posted a pic of the ones I have in a school. Get only those that have the stripe going 'all-the-way-thru-the-tail'.. And, the dorsal fin should be clear.
