If you are going to do a 50% water change by using the Python, how do you go about refilling the tank? Do you use the Python, or do you use some sort of bucket set up to measure out the water correctly and put the dechlorinator in before adding it to the tank?

I like the Python for gravel vacs and water draining, but what is the best way to put new water in, considering that you have to add chemicals to it at the same time?

I use a python, but have no need for water conditioner as our water is from a private well. Before we moved here we were on city water and I would just add the conditioner directly to the tank and then fill it, this should work fine.

i know,i was just gonna ask that...they seem great for downward funtions likedrainage, but can they work the other way? most of the time its just hauling up the buckett to the edge of the tank and hoping i dont spill..
would a python work upwards?

I let the water run into the tank and add Prime (dechlorinator) slowly as the tank fills up. Sure, it kills some bacteria and isn't as good as pre-mixing the water with the dechlorinator before adding it to the tank, but I haven't seen a negative effect yet!

for siphoning that elevation difference would be great (I mean tank higher than sink), because the gravity would really help the draining. For refilling, it would depend on the pressure provided by your sink or hose.

Tinajo, I was worried about that, too when I first got my Python. But everyone said they just add enough water conditioner to treat the entire volume of the tank (to counteract dilution) and fill directly in the aquarium. That's what I do and my fish don't seem the least bit stressed. I just make sure to add the conditioner first. They're actually gotten quite used to the Python, since it's allowed me to do more frequent water changes. Some of them even play in the current when I'm refilling! Hope that helps.

I do the same thing here when refilling with the Python - just add enough dechlorinator to treat the entire tank volume (not just the water you are putting in) before you start refilling with new water. The fish act fine before, during, and afterwards. I have pond snails too, which show no problem, and inverts are particularly sensitive to chlorine and such.

AS the other say, dump in the Prime, python in the water.

I also add the ferts while I'm at it (Flourish and Excell).

I drain all 4 tanks at one, Prime and fill all at the same time (well one at a time).

Took me a whole 1/2 hour today-was doing some aqua gardening whilst the water levels were down.

Remind me never to plant Water Wysteria again; stuff has overtaken 2 of the tanks (had originally planted in the 29 gal community, then used cuttings in the 20). Threw out 1/4 of a 5 gallon bucket of plants....

ooh, if you're ever up in western NC, let me know, i'd take a bucketful. my black moor loves to eat the stuff.

oh, and i just put Prime in my tanks - enough for the entire volume of water - and then refill with the python. the fish don't seem to be bothered, although last time my big bn male did try to attack the end while i was gravel vac'ing. i guess he was trying to save those last tiny bits of. . . whatever it is he was trying to save.
