Hi,
Don't know if anyone remembers me but I inherited my brother's fish, Anyway, Yesterday the water got really gross because the fluval pump from hell conked out. I managed to clean it and put it back together and get it working fine. I changed half the water in the tank cause it was brown and put it plus or minus the same temp treated (with drops) tap water. I think my mistake was not taking the fish out. But the fish are so big they scare me. :(
They are Amazon fish freshwater piranha but without the bite or something like that. I am not a fish afficionato by any means.
Anyway,
My 911 is
The fish are dying and I dont know what to do. I guess I should go tomorrow and get a ph kit and ammonia and nitrate tabs and things?
Can anyone help me?
The pleco isnt looking too good either. The silver flat fish developed white puffy lips and died. the catfish are swimming upside down. One had ick and the guy at the pet store gave me Copper something or another for Ick?
Please help with suggestions. I know you guys and gals are good with fish.
I feel bad for them. Yesterday I was in tears because some of them died. My brother passed away and these are his fish which I am deperately trying to keep alive.
thanks.
Sara

First off, I want to say I am sorry to hear about your brother. I am really sorry for your loss.

The fish may be in shock because of the massive water change although I understand why you did it. You have to be careful with water changes. If the PH and/or the water temp. is different by more then a few degrees then it is possible that the fish are in shock from the new water. When you did the water change, did you use a water conditioner to remove clorine and/or cloramines? Tap water has these chemicals in them that are very detrimental to fish in general weather they are freshwater or saltwater fish. It is best to use a water conditioner such as "Prime" that will remove these chemicals from the water and make it safe for your fish to live in. Have you tested the water? If not, you need to test the water for things like ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite both need to be sitting at 0 in a healthy aquarium and the nitrates need to be less then 20. Less is better. If you do not have a water test kit, I would go and get one. Aquarium Pharmeceuticals Freshwater Master test kit is a very good one to have. Do not buy the strips because thery are inaccurate in thier readings. If you could test the water and post back with the results that would help us to help you get through this. Also if you could post back and tell us what size aquarium this is that would be very helpful too.

Hope this helps.
