Hey gang. I am in the process of revamping my whole 50 gallon setup. I have 6 Mbuna African Cichlids. I have a post with the exact names of them and will post if need be.

I was advised to replace the gravel in my tank with either SAND or CRUSHED CORAL. I was also told to take the fake plants out and build more rocks up for more hiding places for the guys.

My question is this - Where can I find crushed coral/proper sand for the tank? Where can I find rock CHEAP, and what exact type of rock should I look for? I live in the Dallas/Plano area - so somewhere local would be nice!

Here is a picture of my setup. I know alot needs to be changed, but that is why I am doing it.

Thanks to all in advance

I bought CC from Petland when I set up my SW tank. I am sure Petsmart or Petco would sell it also but, can you put CC in a FW setup? If you get some make sure you rinse it like crazy.

This what I was told.

Well, I am new to FW also so I would find out from some oldies around here but that is where I got mine.

I can't remember but I want to say 30-50 dollars but I dropped over $1200 because I went in and bought everything at once tank, stand, filter etc... I know it is not cheap.

This is the rock that you want!!!

Glad you are from Texas, people say that you can find it all over the place here. My LFS in Houston has tons of it, and I guess some landscaping plces have it too and much cheaper...it called Texas holey rock. It's Limestone and formed from water running through it over the years, it looks great in the aquarium. :cool2:

I've got Malawi and Tangyanika cichlids; set up my tanks with a mix of pea gravel and Play Sand from Home Depot, and crushed coral from LFS--bit more expensive, @18.00/20lbs but I like to support local business (it's actually crushed sea shells, same purpose). The blend has suited them very well, and provides them with a diverse mix for moving/shifting around when they excavate. Raises the hardness to where you need it--not just for Saltwater.
