some times my corys go to the top of the water and like stick there head out or like go up to air looks like it to me what may be causing this?

err.... cories are labrynth fish? (someone correct me if I'm wrong)... just like bettas, labrynth fish breathe air so they have to gulp some every once in a while...
On second thought I'm not sure if all catfish breath air, but cories for sure do. Yes, they have a labyrinth organ. If you have ever gone fishing and caught a catfish(I have caught brown bullheads, yellow bullheads, and channel catfish), you will notice that they will live all day in a bucket full of dirty nasty water that kills everything else you put in it. That's because of their labyrinth organ. Catfish have also been known to live a day or more when left in the yard to die. I have never tried this, I don't intend to.

oxygen is oxygen. fish have gills in order to obtain that oxygen from water. fish like bettas or gouramis develop the labyrinth organ through evolution or adaptation because the waters of their natural habitat have very little DO (dissolved oxygen) in the water. so therefore they NEED two ways of breathing. everyother fish will get their oxygen from the water but ocassionally will gulp some air from the surface. when i had weather loaches, they would do this all the time. fish will ocassionally get a mouthful of air. i remember when my comets were eating goldfish flakes voraciously, they would have tons of air bubbles coming out of their gills.
