i'm going to start a 37 gallon tank with a sand sub., and mostly fish with some inverts, i was wondering if it is easier to do a sw tank with or without live rock and also, do i need a protein skimmer if i get live rock or will my penguin 200 bio-wheel do the trick?

thanks

Live rock makes marine/reef set ups so much easyer & nicer looking as for a protein skimmer really is a must for all set ups over 15gallons unless you want to spend alot of time doing water changes plus without a skimmer you wont be able to fully stock your tank without running into problems so its worth the extra £££/$$$`s

if you do feel you want to skip the skimmer then i`d advice putting a product in you filter by seachem called purigen it kicks *** with the ammonia nitrite nitrate waste thats in your tank but so dose a protein skimmer so much better

Live rock does make things much easier, plus it looks good. In my opinion, a skimmer isn't necessary for a tank of that size, provided you have enough live rock. Just go slow with your stocking, and check your levels regularly.

If you want to add a skimmer later, that's fine. But in my opinion, ample live rock, a deep sand bed, and plenty of current would be fine for a 37 gallon. Just don't be tempted to overstock, or you might be sorry you didn't have a skimmer.

You can use your biowheel filter, but with saltwater the wheel will eventually clog up, and just increase your nitrates. Remove the wheel and media, and just use the filter for water circulation and surface agitation.
