I have a 55 gal. tank and I have numerous different community fish along with 2 Cory Cats. The Cory's are great little fish and love to zip around the entire tank.
The question I am about to ask I would like answered with people's real experience and not just what they have read or have been told !

Is it OK to have just 2 Cory's ?
I have heard and been told different views.
I was practically reprimanded on another forum for not keeping (schooling) fish in a group.

So has anyone else kept these guys not in a group ? If so what has been your experience.
I was told my fish are not happy. I don't know what happy is,but they do seem to enjoy themselves.

Cories are great fish, I first bought 2 skunk cories and they loved to zip around the tank, always stayed together. I added 4 more skunk cories after a month and they gathered up with the 2 in the tank, same thing happened, played together very active. I think they seemed to play with each other more when I had 6 compared to two. Working on getting a few more sometime, I lost 2 to ich. My girlfriend has 1 lone cory. He's quite a sad little fish, they need at least one companion, the more the better. Also stay with the same "kind" they tend to not school with other kinds of cories.

I started out with two bronze cories--and they were scared fish, and hid all the time. It didn't help that they were with some pretty mean fish. They were almost two inches when I got them (I thought if I got them bigger they could handle the mean tiger barbs). I moved them out of the tank and added three more bronze cories at about an inch long, and man what a difference I saw. Cory piles, cory acrobatics, all kinds of cory fun. I then moved them to a densely planted tank, and the happyness trippled--they have so much cover that they have the run of the tank. They can swim fast, and hide, and dig through the sand/eco complete. Oooh they are happy!

So I'd say get your cories some friends and they will feel happy happy happy, and then provide them some good cover, and they will feel secure and happy!

Hi,

I think you should get at least two more Cories. Your Cories would be very happy to have some more friends.

I have only nine Cories (two Peppered, three Bronze, four Three-Striped) that live in a 54 gallon. All my Cories get along great with each other and love their many pieces of bogwood to hide under. I started with two Bronze Cories then I got four Three-Striped Cories. Sadly, when I got the Three-Striped they had gill flukes, and three died . Then they gave it to one of my Bronzes and she died too . So then I was left with one Three-Striped and one Bronze which are both doing great now. Since then my Cory population has been growing and now I have nine. In the future, when I get room in my tank again, I'm planning to get many more Cories!!! Lately two of my Bronzes (Freckles and Butter Scotch) are whiskeing alot and they might be breeding soon!!!!!

My 3 cories in a 10 gallon did well together. Now the group of 8 is even more active and exciting. My brother has 2 in a ten gallon that hang out together but don't really do much until lights out.

You have a large tank and if you can spare the room I would suggest adding a few more (and probably stick to the same species).

I have six julii cories in my 20L. They are very active, but they act usually on their own. Sometimes, two or three meet, but this looks arbitrary. I don't see much of a group behavior.

But this might be species-specific. The panda cories in the same LFS were inseparable. Those julii were all over the tank in the shop, too.

I have 25 cories in my 125. There are seven different species and they all seem to recognize other species as family. There are a few antisocial individuals, but for the most part they seem to enjoy the company of other cories, preferring to eat and rest near each other, but not in the same part of the tank every day. I don't think I would want to have fewer than 4 or 5 in a tank.
