The owner of my LFS tells me that a man came in to him this morning and told him that he had just had his tank cracked by a 6 inch firemouth
Apparently the fish spat gravel at the glass any time someone came into the room
His wife went into the room to get somthing the fish took aim and fired and the firemouth and 55 gallons supposedly spilled out on to the floor
I am very dubious about this story.
Could it really happen?
Have any of you guys had a similar experience?
Its a hard story to swallow although the storekeeper said the guy was really upset by it.
I highly doubt that its true. The tanks are made to withstand the abuse. Just think how many people would give up the hobby because there Jag broke through a 75 gal or an umbee broke through a 200gal. IMO Firemouths dont have the size or power needed to pick up a rock big enough and shoot it fast enough to breack a tank. The only way this would be possible is maybe if he filled a 55gal tank ment for reptiles Ive heard the glass is thiner never looked into it myself. But I think its most likely not true.

unless he had bits of ceramic in there - apparently you can break a car windscreen with a tiny bit of spark plug ceramic... so a fish would have no problem spitting a tiny bit at the glass.

I highly doubt it...his wife probably broke it and blamed the fish. Just a guess!

If this were the case she certainly gave herself a lot of mopping up to do.

I wasn't implying that she did it on purpose. She may have just purposely blamed the fish so she didn't catch all the heat.

The tank would have to be in pretty bad condition--my Cories haven't even scratched the bottom of their 10 gallon tank while moving gravel around. If these guys can't scratch a glass tank with gravel, FMs won't break an even-better reinforced tank with gravel.

Im not saying that your theory is wrong Ledslnger,I guess we will never get to the bottom of this fishy story.
