Tank is always well stocked with a variety of foods, algae discs, cichlid pellets, veggies, bloodworm, driftwood, plants. Never really catch him eating much more than sucking on a piece of driftwood. Just curious if there is something that they seem to prefer that is missing.

I don't have striped raffies, but my spotted raffies will slurp down anything they can catch when the light is low. Grass (aka glass or ghost) shrimp seem to be quite palatable.

catching a raph eat is an interesting endeavor.
My striped raph was very good about coming out to eat his disc when I first got him, but I removed his cave he liked because of other problems and now he is more skitich....that and my JD likes to eat any food that enters the tank wether it is meant for him or not!!!!

Why did you remove his cave? That is probably why he is acting so skittish. If there is something wrong with the cave that he had, then I would consider getting him another one. I have a striped rapheal and I rarely see him. I do know though that he eats everything that my other fish eat and when I do see him he is fat and sassy so I know that he is getting enough to eat.

Oh he has a new cave to hide in don't worry. The old cave was one of those tree stump thingies they sell at petsmart that is hollow on the inside. Well one day I noticed the striped raph was swimming around outside of the stump around one of the roots for no reason and then going back in and coming back out. I watched it for a while and actually noticed the root appeared to be vibrating a bit. I took the stump out and my spotted raph was actually stuck inside the root part and couldn't get out. I had to actually break the stump open to get the poor thing out. She is fine now, but she was always kind of shy. The striped raph isn't quite as social a eater anymore though. They now hang out underneath the piece of drifwood I moved over to where the stump was.

mine shares accommodations with one of the lemon jacks that cleared out a sizable cave under a piece of slate. It's nice because he likes the lee side of the cave so anytime you want to say hi he's near the opening. It's just hard for me to tell what the Raph prefers because the 2 crays do a bang up job at cleaning the substrate.
