I hear mixed opinions about keeping severums with oscars, and i was looking for a peacful cichlid or cichlids that would do well with my oscar, would a sverum work? any other suggestions are also appreciated, my tank specs are in my sig.

Hey there,

Is this a grow out tank, are you planning on getting a bigger tank in the future or is this it? If you don't intend to be moving any fish out then I'd probably say you're pretty close to your stocking limit as it is. Especially with the oscar and plecos, which I hear are veritable poop factories :). Perhaps if you tell us the amount of filtration you have running, a better judgement can be made. That's just based on what I've picked up reading through other threads, I may well be incorrect.

Can't help you with the choice of fish sorry, I have no experience with cichlids of any kind.

Nice stocking though by the way, the tank must look quite impressive. :)

As far as aggression levels are concerned, I have had no problems with my pair of gold sevs living with my oscar. The sevs were full grown and the oscar was a baby when they were added together, which may have made a difference.

I moved this too the cichlid forum to get you more edjucated opinions. I would say the 2 would be ok together, but also echo that you are close to your limits, unless you are running a large really good filter. You have quite a few nitrate factories in there as it is. BUt I would think if filtration was good you could fit a sev or 2.

With good filtration and more importantly, frequent water changes, it should work out no problem.

you can go for it, but nothing more in your tank after this lol!! :) maybe a jaguar but a silver arowana its better...im joking@@ :joke:

post some pics of them when you get it, try that the sev is the same size or nearly of the oscar to avoid problems

This past weekend, I tried putting a 5 in Gold Severum in my 125 gal with an 8" tiger oscar and a 4" albino oscar. Within 30 seconds, the smaller albino was lip locking with the severum and attacking him. The severum tried his best to ignore the oscar, but ultimately I removed the severum and put him in a 75 gal with my angels. Both he, and the oscars are much happier now.

thanks for the good advice guys, as foor filtration i have 2 power filters, one rated for 60 gallons and one rated for 100 gallons. I also do 50% wcs every other day, but if this isnt enough i could propably manage daily and occasionally miss one. im also planning on upgrading my tank to a 6'-30"-31'' in around a year. Ill get a severum or two unless there are any other suggestions. how many sevs should i get? do they do well in pairs or are they better alone?
