I've been ogling some Cryptocoryne parva at the fish store for my betta's as-of-now-unsightly tank-- has anyone had any experience with this variety? I've gathered that it is somewhat more demanding (not to mention more expensive) than other crypt species, so I wanna make sure I can keep it from dying before buying.

Is the parva likely to survive in a 5 gal tank with 9W of lighting and 79*F water? Is there anything else I should know, or should consider using in its stead?

It does require a bit more light and 9 watts over a 5 may not do the trick. Especially it is NO (normal output) fluorescent. CF (compact fluorescent) would, IMO be fine for C. parva.
Having said that, I would not be discouraged from trying it if you like it (as I do). I've seen longer shots than that grow fine in certain tanks.
Temperature is not an issue. Crypts. no matter the temp, within reason, is not usually an issue.
I would suggest trying www.aquabid.com/ for a better price. Click on 'rooted plants' and then click on Lowcoaster. He sells very nice parva for a very reasonable price. I've never had a complaint dealing with him.
