OK so I'm not exactly "new" to freshwater tanks exactly, but I am new to this website and forum, so....hi! :hi:

My first question is a pretty silly one. So I just set up a new 20 gallon recently, and it is now (happily) populated with:

1 opaline gourami
1 blue gourami
1 algae eater
1 long finned rosy barb
1 dalmation molly
1 little frog, I don't know what kind but he's beige with brown spots. really cute!

OK so I've been watching the children play, and I've noticed that my opaline gourami likes to follow the blue gourami and the rosy barb around, and sort of grab them with his "feelers" (for lack of better word). In another 20 gallon I have, there is a gold gourami that does the exact same thing for a red gourami, and vice-versa! Is this some sort of courting ritual or are they trying to fight or what? And does anyone know exactly what the feelers are actually for?

Thanks! :D

Hi,

First off, welcome to Aquaria Central!!!

Off topic, but you said you didn't know what species of frog you have, but the way you described it sounds like a African Dwarf Frog.

If your Gouramis are different species, I pretty sure it has nothing to do with courting. I think might just be a dominance thing.

Some Gouramis live in murky waters and they use their feelers to feel around so they can get around with out bumping in to things. I think thats what the many books I read said.

Hope this helps!

I see Gouramis doing that all the time. I think it is a way of sensing their environment.
