OMG! I tried my pleco on a couple pieces of avacado, he loved em and wolfed them down quickly. This was fine. Last night, I put a couple more pieces in, one was a bit large, but seeing as how the crayfish were helping, I didn't see a problem with it. I got home from work today and my tank was messed! There was a slime all over, and my filter had backed up and was leaking all over the place. I checked levels and my nitrites were up to 1.6mg/L and the smaller yellow lab was near the top of the tank and looking distressed.
Some quick celaning action, and a 50% water change later and the nitrites are down to 0.3mg/L and dropping, but holy scat that was close.
Moral of the story: Don't feed your bottom feeders soft, nearly water soluable vegetables that decay very quickly.
