My tank has a lot of surface motion and overflow. When I drop flakes they would swirl around and would later get sucked in by the overflow. So recently I bought a feed ring. But the problem with the feeding ring is that only my clown and few other fishes actually come up to the feed ring and feed. While the other such as the Royal Gramma and Nasso Tang would remain at the bottom of the tank waiting for the flakes to drop. And they never do as they always get sucked in by the overflow before they can drop.

When I feed them dried shrimp and krill, it is the same problem. Once a week I feed them finely chopped fresh shrimp. Small pieces of shrimp would drop the bottom at slower rate than pellets, thus enabling them to catch their food. Pellets falls to fast for my fish.

Can someone recommend a type of fish that is slow sinking?

maby install a timer to turn off the pump for like five min when you feed. This would also serve as a regular test to see if your sump will overflow if the power goes out while you are not home.

This would require putting not only my pump in the sump, but also the 2 powerheads, wave maker and the closed-loop pump on the timer.
That is a little too much trouble.
I rather soak the flakes since that seems to work. But unfortunately I simply don't have the time to soak 3 or 4 time a day.

I use the ring like you do, but I notice that some of the flakes do sink down enough for the other fish to eat, my clown spends all of his time sitting just below the ring waiting to be fed, he is a pig. I put the ring on the other side of the tank from my overflow. Could you just unplug your pump for a few minutes? Why do you feed 3-4 times a day? I probably only feed 3-4 times a week. Now I wonder if I am feeding enough. I have been feeding like this for 10 years, do you think my fish need more food? I figure they can eat algae or small critters. I also feed a variety, sometimes frozen food sometimes flake and sometimes live food. Although I have been reef keeping a long time, it is obvious that I still have lots to learn, right now my tank is overrun with bubble algae. Good luck!

I feed them 3 times day. In the morning before going to work, as soon as I get home and then few minutes before turning the light off at night.

The amount I feed are in small proportions and my fish gobble them up in less than 30 seconds and very few floats to the bottom. Matter of fact my clownfish and damsels come to surface and stick around the ring just before feeding time.

I have a very busy schedule and I simply don't have the time to turn my powerhead on and off evertime I feed.

I have noticed that when I soak the flakes, shrimp or the pellets in the water a few minutes before putting it in the tank. The pieces float to the bottom slowly and takes about 15 to 20 second. Just enought time for the fish to comsume them before hitting the bottom. Now I thinking of getting rid of the auto feeder and building or modifying the one I have to pre soak the food before dropping.
