hi can anyone give me any pointers I have recently planted several very small red tiger lotus plants with no rhizomes , their leaves vary from newly formed to 1.5" in size and they are dropping about one leaf a day the stem of the shedded leaf appears shredded .
Also I purchased a ropey looking piece of star grass with grey to light green leaves but thought it would be ok because it is a vigorous plant . Someone said to me that the change in light levels from the original tank to my tank can cause some initial die back before it regenerates has anyone else heard anything about sudden changes in light levels effecting star grass .
My tank is 48*12*15" 31 gallon tank with 50/50 eco complete and gravel substrate and about 2.5watts / gallon light levels and DIY yeast reactor for co2.
Any help would be much appreciated thanks :)

there are many things that stress out stargrass

temp
kh
lumens
ferts
micros
co2 (low)
too high amount of NO3

this will come back once stable with good parameters.

Ive grown alot of the red tiger lotus and as long as you did not break off too many roots you should be able to replant them w/out rizome. The shredded stem is weird lookign huh? they naturally drop and replenish a lot of leaves, I always had to clip mine every three days sometimes!
I would watch it closely though since less than 1.5 inch leaves is a very undeveloped plant. I suggest using rizomes if you want really nice growth with the insurance of the plant coming back. I buy bulbs and they shoot out leaves faster and nicer than buying full grown plants usually.

Ive got LOTS of red Tiger lotus (N. Zenkerei 'Red') and they grow really easy. Tiger Lotus is a Rosette plant, Much like Sword plants. They have a Rosette where all the stems come together at the base before the roots. You want to make sure the roots are covered in an easy substrate (not rocky as they like a softer substrate) But the Rosette of the plant sticks up through the substrate. Like other Rosette plants they are heavy substrate feeders. They like either a rich nutrient substrate or if you need to place root tabs under the plant for food. The plants start off as a bulb and grow and can be plucked from the bulb and planted As the plant grows they send off chutes (much like swords do again a Rosette plant) These chutes produce new plants. They can be left to grow and increase the size of the plant or trimmed and replanted when big enough. Ive got some of these in a 90 gallon tank that are HUGE. As well as in several other tanks. These plants will do fine in medium light to somewhat lower light. The lower light set ups ive seen them reach for the waters surface. In Higher light they tend to stay shorter and bush out. I normally have 5 or 6 plants coming out of other plants weekly. So they can reproduce easily.

Sounds to me like you have a Nutrient issue with yours. Whats your substrate? Do you fertilize? How about root tabs? Whats your light like?
