I think I've narrowed down the overflow and return pump for a 55 gal tank with a 55 gal sump/refugium. I am planning on buying the marineland S.O.S. skimmer box and a RIO 2100 pump. I am looking for some advice on these. Has anyone used them?
The pump is rated at 692gph, and the overflow box is rated at 600gph. I think with 2.5-3' of head that pump should work?? I want to get this started but I have never set up a sump before and I could use some advice. Thanks.

I highly recommend re-thinking your pump choice. Rio pumps have a horrible reputation for self destructing and wiping out entire tanks...and shocking people. They're just cheap pumps and you get what you pay for. You'd be surprised at the horror stories coming from Rio owners. I have two Rios in my closet and I wouldn't even give them away to my worst enemy.

As an alternative, Supreme Mag Drive pumps are quite reliable and reasonably priced - worth a look.

Thanks for the warning on the RIO. I checked out the Supreme pumps and I think the mag drive 7 will do what I need and it is not much more at bigals.

Glad to help. The last thing I want to see is another thread about a tank being destroyed by one of those Rios ;)

That's definitelt the last thing I want to see, too. :o
Is it best to run the mag drive pumps submersed or inline?

Submersed. They have a history of leaking when ran external.

Definitely submersed.
