Ya that would be really large for an oscar. I think the ussual max is 14 with the real big ones being 16.

They get that big, but usually don't survive in Aquaria because the tank is usually to small, and they are fed low quality food. Use the link in my signature and check on MFK!

I have a 13" oscar. Total length that is.
All the people who see him locally tell me he's one of the biggest they have seen.
I've seen a few pics online of larger O's however.

At the Shedd Aquarium they have some that are close, if not a full 18". but then again they are in like a 10,000 gal aquarium. I'm sure that doesn't hurt.

The key here is what measurement your asking for/using, SL or TL, FL isn't usable with O's.
IMO SL is the measurement best used to accurately relay size/mass. especially since caudal fin length/shape can vary widely.
TL is only good for bragging.
The largest O I've personally seen was at the was at the Aquarium in the Mall of the Americas in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, I approximated it's at 16"-17"(SL), 19"-20"(TL).
The average adult O is 10"-16"(SL), I've heard many claims of larger than 16"(SL) but never were they verified upon challenge.
(It doesn't take a lot of effort to net, lay a ruler on/next to and take a pic. )
I'd love to see proof (pic with ruler) of a 21" (SL or TL) that isn't a long finned/veiltail.
