Can be anywhere from 2-3 inches if it is a planted tank, to 1/4 inch thick for decoration. (I have rams in both...) If you go with just a tiny bit to cover the floor it is easier to keep clean. Also, you absolutely can add some live plants by attaching annubias and java fern to driftwood. (If you go with the 1/4 inch...)

I have a Bolivian Ram in both my 20G tanks.
One tank is unplanted and I have about 3/4 of an inch of sand.
The other is planted and I have 1 1/2 inches of sand.
IMO sand is easier to keep clean and Rams love it because they like to filter feed on the sand and dig little 'breeding holes'.
