i currently have a 29g setup that has been running for a few months with one aggressive 4-inch male opaline gourami and one 4-inch zig-zag eel.

i more or less bought the tank just for the gourami; he was so dominating in my 55g that the other fish were suffering...i like him a lot, he's just a big jerk, really. the eel is the only fish i have that he really gets a long with well, and by that, i mean he ignores him. in fact, the only other thing i've been able to keep him with peacefully was a couple of crayfish in a 20L. i think they were equally terrified and bewildered by each other, but i was a bit worried of fins getting ripped eventually by the ever-growing crayfish.

anyway, what i'm fishing for here are some suggestions on what might work with such a beautiful, ******* gourami? ideas?

find a bigger opaline :P that's what i did when i had a dominant gourami - i just played with the pecking order. Eventually they settled down. Plant lots - salvinia (frogbit) or other floaters on top, lots of vallis, keep the sightlines in the tank short. then some nice tetras - i like buenos aires tetras, but that sorta thingy. Clown plec? give him bogwood and a place to hide if he wants. or, and i say this EVERY TIME, hoplos (Megalechis personata - smaller version). You couldn't wish for a more friendly catfish. Plus they get a bit of bulk behind em (about 5"-6") and they're armoured. But they won't eat anything. Apparently cories are descended from callicthys callicthys which is very similar to the hoplos, so you can see where the playful yet unobtrusive character comes from
