Well, I actually have a 55g that has rams and angels. I started with two rams and four juvie angels. The rams fought all the time, to the point where the baby ram was constantly trembling and pale. So I took the bully out and put him in his own tank.
The angels get along well enough--certainly better then the rams did, but I fully anticipate having to seperate them when they get a bit older.
I have seen some small chasing from the angels to the rams, but mostly associated with feeding time. Angels are such pigs!
I have a 38g tank with a pair of angels and a pair of rams, the rams will chase the angels when they are in spawning mode and visa versa.
So I'd say no more then one male ram in a 55g, and watch the individual temperments of the angels you put in.
it'a a matter of territory. angels in general get along fine with rams.
the rams tend to stay in the lower half of the aquarium the angels the upper half.
if you want more than one male ram you will need plenty of structure so their territories can be established. include natural curtains..I use driftwood and java ferns to break up the bottom.
both will tend to get very territorial when they spawn.
I have a similar setup. I have the perfect solution for the feeding needs. Get those little green ball cichlid food for the angels. Drop a couple in for each angel and then put the flakes and other stuff in. If you feed an angel flakes, they'll just keep eating. The little green balls keep them busy so the rest of the fish can eat. It's cute too. It's like giving a kid a toy, they're so enticed with what they're doing.
In my 75, the angels and rams ignore each other outside of spawning time... and then they don't like much of anything, no matter the species. I'd say that this wouldn't have any problems... it seems to be a pretty common combination.
