I posted last week about a strange growth that appeared on two of my three emerald green cory catfish in my 10 gallon tank. It looks like a small, white sac at the base of the dorsal fin - right where the fin meets the body. This showed up about a week ago. Now, one of the corys appears to be extremely bloated. I mean, it looks HUGE. All of my water parameters are within a normal range and I do weekly 25% water changes.

Four days ago, I started treating with melafix and pimafix simultaneously for the growths on the dorsal fins. I have read a lot on this and other websites about whether or not this actually has any value, but I didn't know what else to do since I'm not sure what the corys have and don't know how to treat it. I have never had success in the past treating with antibiotics or antifungals - they always seem too toxic for the fish and cause a swift decline in their health, usually ending in death.

None of my other fish appear to be affected. My third cory cat appears healthy so far. I also have three neons and three glowlight tetras in this 10 gallon tank.

Any ideas??!! I am so worried about losing my catfish!

Hi,

It sounds like dropsy. It's not that easy to cure. Get some medication form your petstore to treat it with, and move him/her to a hospital tank. Keep us up dated on what happens.

You can google it and you'll get much more info on dropsy.

Hope your Cory gets better!
