Will tiger barbs nip the fins of angelfish?

ILOVEBETTAS

It's Cory Lover's cat!
I want to get a small group of tiger barbs, but will they nip at the angelfish? I was planning to get a large tank and I want both.

Thanks

Yes.

I would strongly advise against angelfish and tiger barbs, no matter how large your tank. I'd just get two smaller tanks and have both. A 30g for the tigers and a 55g for the angels would be better then a 90g for both.

Okay... one last question... can tiger barbs be with gouramis? I've never had problems with either tiger barbs or gouramis being aggressive... will they be okay together if the barbs are in schools?

No to the tiger barb/gourami combo. I started with that combo and it didn't work--it was a disastor. Tiger barbs really do best in a species only tank. You can get them in different color morphs, which make a pretty sight. But don't put tigers in with anything with long fins--like gouramis or angels.

I second this, depending on the species of gourami. I had a golden gourami in with a group of six tiger barbs and two dwarf gouramies. I had to move the golden gourami to its' own tank...but in my case the golden gourami was the overly aggressive one (it was about twice as big as the tigers). It would chase and pick at the tiger barbs lights on or lights off. I will say that my tiger barbs are getting along with my redfire dwarf gourami, but it has several places in the tank to hide out. Lately it has been out swimming with the tiger barbs and all is well. It could be because I also added 3 green barbs and 3 albino barbs when I removed the golden, so all the barbs are more interested in themselves.

In a large enough school/shoal, tiger barbs will generally keep their aggressiveness to themselves. But I think having an angel, gourami, or any other long-finned fish is too much of a temptation for them. It's like that scene in Finding Nemo with the three sharks having the "Fish are Friends, Not Food" meeting only to have one of them go beserk when he smells Dory's drop of blood.

just because you have a large school does not mean that the fish will not nip at another's long fins. the large school simply spreads out agression, but it does not eliminate it, and even worse, one might start nipping and then the rest are going to want a turn too.

angels and gouramis with tiger barbs is a no. the tigers WILL nip at the angel's and gourami's fins.

basically he is saying that 99% of the time this is a bad combo. If you've been able to do it, then you are the exception not the rule.

And if you're thinking about doing it, do you want to take the chance that you could be part of the 1% to not have problems? Better odds than winning the lottery, but not good enough to spend my money on these fish combos :)

Yes, as a rule Tiger Barbs are nippers. There are always exeptions though
