I have two kinds of flakes. One HBH Veggie Flakes, and one Big Al's normal flake. I also feed them NutraFin Floating Pellets (my fish love 'em), Big Al's Plankton, two types of cichlid pellets (one Wardley, one Hikari), HBH Shrimp Pellets, HBH Veggie Wafers, New Life Spectrum H2O Stable Wafers, and bloodworms once a week. The fish I have Cories, Convicts, Firemouths, Angelfish, a Three-Striped Gourami, a CAE, and Upside-Downers.
I feed my fish mainly any general flake food along with daphinia and algea wafers or cucumber to add vairiety to there diet. I also have pellets. My fish are stated in my sig.
I was given 3 of my tanks and they all came w/ fish food so that's what I've been using. However I'm a bit of a foodie myself and started researching. I have 3 dogs who I cook for (due to one of my dog's illness she cannot eat dog food) but I was surprised to discover that fish food can vary and even be home made!
I use:
TetraMin Tropical Flakes (again, what I was given but the fish seem to like it)
Hikari Algae Wafers for the Pleco (he/she likes them)
LFS brand Bloodworms (the fish like them)
I probably will stay with Hikari for wafers, worms, etc . . . and TetraMin for the flakes.
Btw, is there really a difference between TetraMin's tropcial flakes and the flakes for color brightness? And what is daphnia?
Hi. I'm from California, but I noticed TetraMin is from Germany and/or Australia and Hikari from Japan. I actually like the fact the food is "imported". Makes it seem fancier.
This may seem odd but since the Japanese are known for their healthy diets and longevity, I like the fact the food is made in Japan. Plus, my LFS primarily stocks Hikari and their fish always look really good.
In my community tanks (platies, danios, cories), for flakes I use Tetramin tropical flakes. I use their sinking tropical granules as well. Those tanks also get Hikari Freeze-Dried Daphnia, Aquarian Shrimp Pellets, Hikari Algae Wafers, and Hikari Frozen Bloodworms during the week. I change the feeding schedule all the time, but a typical week looks something like this:
Monday - No Food
Tuesday - Flakes and Shrimp Pellets
Wednesday - Frozen Bloodworms
Thursday - No Food
Friday - Algae Wafers
Saturday - Freeze-Dried Daphnia and Tropical Granules
Sunday - Flakes and Shrimp Pellets
I always fast them at least once or twice a week. Fish don't eat every day in the wild, and in my experience they seem to stay healthier and the tank stays cleaner.
All my fish hate those. Even the guppies who usually gulp down everything don't like those. I feed them to the ghost shrimp; they get everything nobody else likes .
I have the Omega One Color Flakes, TetraMin flakes, Nutrafin Spirulina Flakes (the guppies love those), freeze-dried bloodworms, Omega One Veggie Rounds (the cories fight with the yamato shrimp over those), Wardley Algae Wafers (very popular with everyone), Hikari Sinking Wafers (only the Yamato shrimps touch those), Hikari freeze-dried Daphnia and Wardley Shrimp Pellets.
and unforuntaley the next 3 days they are on pepso because my beloved gourami came with clear loooong stringy poop so I am treating the tank with guard also I wasn't sure what it was when i got him thought it was normal... thanks to this site i hope to save his life.
