The ac 30 is not enough of a filter for a 30g tank. Two ac 30s would work. My 30g has a ac 50 and an elite 20. My 38g has two ac50s.

When i started i used the Hydor Bravo250. it is a GREAT filter.
Now, currently, i am useinga Fluval canister filter.

AC70 if you're not going planted, some type of canister if you are.

I am using a Whisper 30-60 on my 38 gallon. I have been happy with it's performance. You should also look at the Emperor 280.

Worst filter IMO. Good idea and principle with the water being forced through the filter, but as my cartridge got older the top of it seperated and made a little stream shooting straight up where filter seperated and caused about 20 gallons of water to flow all over the floor. I'll never forget my friend from florida was sleeping my living room on the floor and she came running into my wife and I bedroom at 2 in the morning telling me there was water all over the floor and the fish tank must have sprung a leak. Well thankfully it was just the filter but I threw it a way after that and will never use another one.

i second the AquaClear 70, at 300gph the turnover rate of filtration would be 10x in your 30G, which is very good.

What about the AquaTech 30-60? I just bought one....and it has a HUGE amount of bio-media for the good bacteria. So far so good!

I like Whispers. I use a Whisper 60 on my 20 gallon, but I have goldies, and I would have to say that it would be perfect for a 30 gallon tank. With just a few fish, you could get away with using a Whisper 40.
Whisper 30 - 145 gph
Whisper 40 - 210 gph
Whisper 60 - 330 gph
