Are my clams dead?

I have 3 freshwater clams. One was moving around 2 days ago, and is currently resting on its side. Another hasn't moved at all since about 2 1/2 weeks ago,and has stayed with the part that opens never touching the ground since then and once every 3 days has some wierd gunk hanging out of it's mouth.The last one hasn't moved around at all in the 3 weeks it's been in the tank, is in the same position as the second one, and pretty much does nothing at all. if you think they are possible dead,take them out and smell them,you will know if its dead :D

Are they dead?
I heard that that's their prefered state. It's very hard to feed clams appropriately.
