anybody have info on these fish ? Tank size growth rate compatability?? any info helpful thinking of buying some for my kids christmas present

my guess is Dyed "Jellybean" parrots....and waste of money to buy. color fades and supporting a huge malpractice in fish is a terrible shame.

now now i havent bought them yet lol my lfs told me they were genetically altered , now i have a problem with that also but i would never buy a dyed fish thats why im doing research googled but just came up with reg blood parrots so i turned to this great forum thanks for the insight

Candy parrots are blood parrots (or jellybean parrots) that have been dyed. Do not buy them. They don't live as long and aren't as healthy...because they've been tortured to look "pretty."

You local fish store is right. Blood parrots are hybrids that do not naturally occur in the wild--not that anyone has discovered, that is... they are genetically altered by breeding two different kinds of fish to get the desired characteristics. It's not some mad scientist splicing genes, but its altering their genes through selective breeding.

I recommend that you purchase a blood parrot. They are really cool fish...although there are people out there that believe that since they were "made" by humans they are wrong. I don't hold that belief, but some do.

To keep a bp a 55 gallon would be ideal. They're like most other S.A. and C.A. cichlids and like somewhat softer water, but can acclimate to harder water if necessary. I don't recommend a planted tank as they love to rearrange. They will dig in the substrate, as well. Feed them a variety of foods made for cichlids, peas, bloodworms, brine shrimp, etc. And last but not least, they need a temp of 76-82 F.

There are some really awesome forums out there that are dedicated to bps, too. I have gotten a ton of good info there. I hope that helps!
