If you are looking for a cheap background do what I do and use tinfoil. This looks great comes in different colors and even paternes now. I don't like to fight with triing to keep it all looking flat all the time so I crumple it slightly for a totaly different look. 1 rool of tinfoil will cover a few large or a lot of small tanks. I think it looks better then store bot backings and if kept smoth it will give a mirror like effect. Not realy a DIY but I felt this was best searved in this section.

I use a large piece of fabric with velcro. It's cheap, washable, and you can find any color or pattern at the local fabric store.

I still wait that someone suggests black latex pants...
I was gonna suggest that but I couldn't fit me AND the tank in the pants....
Oh well, maybe after the holidays

another cheap and affective way is to use large garbage bags with a bit of vegetable oil, or vaseline, whatever your liking is.

Is the vegetable oil to stick the background on? I've been trying to find a way to adhere the background onto my tank, without leaving a permanent stain or damage to the background (like glue would)
