My 20h has been running for around 2 months now. I am slowly getting bored of my gravel now. I have live plants, so what would be the best gravel that is not too expensivee. It would be best if you can find it at most LFS and petco's and petsmarts. What procedure would I do to change the gravel? Check out my sig for the stocking.

Hello!?!?!

Why is no one answering? :(

Not sure.

What would be a good and easy to care for and cheap substrate for live plants. Community tank too.

Flourite is the only plant substrate I can think of right now. I know of at least 1 other but it's on the tip of my tongue, or rather, my fingers and I just can not remember the name of it off the top of my head. But your substrate should be just fine. I use regular gravel in my planted tank. Personally I would not bother changing out because 1)It would be work, and I am lazy, and 2) your tank will go through a mini cycle and you may have to do daily water changes for a week or 2 if you don't want your fish to die or get hurt.

Ok.

Ok, but how big is your gravel. My gravel is about half a pea.

The other substrate is called eco-complete. Either eco-complete which is a black color and very fine substrate or florite which is more reddish and bigger pieces that the eco-complete is fine to use in a planted aquarium. They do tend to be a bit pricey though. It is perfectly fine to use just ordinary gravel unless for some reason you don't like or are bored with the substrate that you have right now.

i just went through a gravel change over. what I did was to remove the gravel and place a bit in a new pantyhoe, then put down the gravel and then put the gravel in the pantyhoe on top of the new gravel. I did one side one day and then tested my water. No ammonia, then did the other side. Glad to say that i didn't go through a mini cycle at all and like the new look.

I've also done the pantyhoe (is that a word? lol) trick; it actually worked so well I saved the pantyhoe full of gravel and "hid" it in one of my tanks. Now if I have to cycle a tank I can just toss in the old pantyhoe!
