won't they get sucked up the filter?!!?
That would depend on the filter. Pelagic fry are reared in captivity, but do require special setups. It is just that nobody has found the requirements for the small crabs yet. With their low cost and wide availablity it is not very practical.

Hello all, new here. I had to register so I could ask a question about the red claw crabs. How do you know which is a male and female?
As stated earlier in the posts, there's not alot of information on these crabs on the net. I made a web page on them since I bought some and have been keeping them. Maybe someone else will find the information useful.
check it out. http://www.geocities.com/elgecko1989/crab.html
They are widely available because they are so easy to catch in the wild, just as are fiddlers.

Flip the crab over and look at the triangular abdomen. Males have a long thin abdomen in contrast to females who have a much wider abdomen.
Some examples I found on the net (blue crabs)

Tom, Thanks for posting the pictures of the crabs. Only if I knew that when I bought them. I would have been able to look through the fish bag to see what I had. Not that it really matters. Oh, just got an idea, maybe I could tell next time they molt by looking at the old exoskeleton.

One one side note.. I highly recomend that if you buy these crabs, dont buy too many males since they do have a tendency to be much more agressive when they encounter one another.. i use to have 2 male and 2 female but one of the males killed the other when they came into contact. the next day i found one legless crab upside down.
