some of you know my plight with the set up of my new tank. here is the bottom line. my nitrites are sky high and have been for about 3 weeks. nothing i do has brought them down. amonia and nitrates are good. i have done two doses of bio-spira and dose with stability every day. i don't know what to do. i finally did a gravel cleaning and got some of the waste out of there but i don't know what else to do! i have a biowheel filter and bio media in my tank. any suggestions? the tank is about 1 1/2 months old now. i know i'm "in the middle of a cycle" but should the nitrite phase really be taking this long?!?

is this a fishless cycle?

I agree don't add any chemicals..they may be throwing off the balance.

If this is a fish cycle then I would suggest you try to control the nitrites with water changes.

have you tested the water source? when did you dose Biospira last?

normally it isn't unusual for nitrites to hang around for awhile.

i last dosed with the bio-spira on monday. i haven't tested the water source. maybe i will do that tonight. i didn't even think about that!

And I always thought that the purpose of Bio-spira was that you put it together with the fish into the aquarium .

in my sig you can see that i have fish in there already.

because that was what i was told to do. this is my first tank and i was told that adding the stability would help the fish cope with the high nitrites and would help stabalize everything. it's supposed to reduce "new tank syndrome" in fish. i'm just doing what i was told.
