View Full Version : Cleaning a Used Canister? What to flush hoses with?

So I got a nifty little Eheim 2211 off eBay for my 10 gallon. It's pretty clean all around, but the hoses have some gunk that run through through them (I get this same gunk on my Eheim 2213 hoses), and I'm wondering what the best way to clean this would be. Can I put bleach and water in the tubes and let it soak? Or am I better off getting new hoses?

If the hoses are in good condition Eheim sell a nice little brush on a wire that will do the job for you.

just buy new hoses with the money you saved.
You don't know what is in those hoses and they are much more dificult to clean than the canister.
Using someone elses hoses is like wearing their underwear. How clean do they need to be before you would wear them? For me nothing could make them clean enough.

If you decide that you don't want to use someone elses underwear, you'll still need a brush when your own gets soiled.

LOL, thanks. Now I need to work on finding the 9/12mm hose size. Big Al's has it online, but I can't justify paying $7.45 shipping for $1.47 worth of hose (I just restocked supples and don't need anything else).

I run two Eheim Pro IIs. Once a year I clean the hoses using a bleach solution. The only caveat is to rinse them well. if you are still worried after rinsing hust use water heavily dosed with dechlor to be double safe.
Also, most hardware type stores sell tubing in a variety of IDs and ODs. However it will be clear not green like Eheim hose.

go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get tubing there. Just make sure its rated for potable water (which eliminates tubing that leaches chemicals)

I'm experimenting with a G string, if you are clever you can wear them for 6 days. All you do is turn 120 degrees each day for 3 days then turn them inside out and you have another 3 days

In the fish stores I managed I bought the whole thing and sold them for a little profit of course they gave us a little discount also. But yea its the same stuff. There are lots of things that are cheaper outside the pet indestry. Shut I have been using TC for years and get it in mexico from the human drug stores (wouldn't suggest triing to sell it though) and its worked greate.
If they don't have the exact size get a little larger and buy an addaptor. I would suggest taking a small peice of hose in with you.

Sorry, I digress...either use the pull-through brush or brush on a wire...or get new hoses. I'm not a fan of cleaning vinyl hoses in bleach, as they smell like bleach for a long time after cleaning.

Dip the equipment in diluted bleach solution. You may need to leave it there for perhaps a day or so.
Once done, rinse with water.
Then do the same treatment with cheaply obtained white vinegar. May not take so long though. This neutralizes the bleach.
Rinse well with water.
