Can they live with african cichlids? What size tank do they need? How big do they get? How hardy are they?

i am assuming by saying "regular plecos" you mean the common variety.

they are much too large, imo, for most people to house, reaching, at least 2-3' long. they also place a tremendous bioload on the system

any reason your set obn commons ? there might be smaller ones you can fit in with cichlid, even some that only need a 20g.

As above.. BIG fish. Also, with some of the more agressive and territoral cichild fish, the pleco's armor coat is no defense. Then tend to pluck out a pleco's eyes. Depends on the individual fish, tank side, and agression level of the tank, but it does happen.

If it's a smaller, less super agressive tank, there may still be good pleco choices, just not a common. Not without at least 75 gallons, or a 50 gallon long and flat.

Best bet might be to reduce feeding and light, and just scrape algae.

please check out the site rbishop listed.

common plecos can vary in size and not all of them get to 2'
