Green Water

I have a 90G tank that has had green water for about 4 days and it seems like it won't go away. I did a 30% water change yesterday and put in this Clear Water stuff andstill nothing. I'm thinking it's a aglae bloom but I don't know how to get rid of it. Could someone help me with this.
 
Try doing 50% water change.. I have done it when my tank hasnt been clean for three weeks when I live town for work. when I come back I change 50% but never had a fish die yet becuse of 50% water change.
 
how long do you leave your lights on?
is your tank near a window?

best thing is to NOT use any chemicals, do very frequent water changes and cut the time your light is on. that usually kills algae.

you may also have something in your water that is sparking the algae bloom but with out more info i cant really say
 
I agree with not using "the Clear Water stuff" any more.

If you do not have any live plants, then I would leave the lights off. I would feed the fish less (or even stop feeding for a few days). I would also see if the tank is near direct sunlight. If it is, I would either block the light or move the tank.

If you have live plants, I have no clue what to do.

Keep up with the water changes. Maybe 30% a daily until it is cleared up.
 
Green water is a type of free floating algae called Euglaena. It is common in newly set up tanks and rare in established ones. It comes from excess nutrients in the water column in addition to excess light. A four day black out will take care of the problem... drape something over the tank or cover the sides with newspaper to keep light out. Even if you do have live plants, they will have stored enough to survive 4 days. The algae, however, will not.

However, this will not take care of the excess nutrients. W/Cs and limit feeding should help that. Other possible remedies are UV filter and Diatomaceous earth filter. Here's a link at aquatic plant central for more info.

Is your tank getting a lot of sunlight? That alone with your tank light can cause an algie bloom.

I have a double strip light the doesnt take long to cause an algie bloom in my 90. I run and ditome filter and vacume the tank out every other week. Since the ditome strips the algie out of the water I don't have blooms any more, but I can't let my tank go unless I remove one of the bulbs.

how much light are you running?

I have a 75 with 220 watts I don't have green water problems but occassional algae issues on some plants..
plants will compete for nutrients and if you get the tank balanced (lights,nutrients,CO2) you can keep algae in check.

I am currently working on getting a better balance as I do occassionally get small break outs.
 
Yeah good point. I don't have any live plants. My GT is a digger.
Not sure on the bulbs. I would have to pull them. I have 2 48 in thats all I can say off hand.
 
I also got green alge bloom this last week, did water changes, limited the lights on, things are looking a lot better, not quit clear, but doing much better.
 
my tank is clear!! I did a water change, 3 in the last week and my tank is crystal clear. thank you all for your help things are looking good now, hopefully in another week we can add a few more fish!!
