I have an extremely pg platy (wayyy overdue), who has so far delivered several dead fry - but is swimming frantically and has to stop every few minutes to rest - basically "fish hyperventilating". Then when rested a bit, goes back to swimming like a maniac! She's obviously overdue on delivery for a reason now that I'm seeing dead ones being expelled. She's having trouble getting more out though - is there anything I can do to help her. I'm afraid she will die in the process of trying to get them all out. HELP!!??

:help: Someone has to know something that can help her before she completely swims herself to death - seemingly trying to "induce labor".

I dont think there is much you can do :(
is this her first batch?
how old is she?if you dont know, how big is she?

I've only had her since the first of September (this year), but who knows how old she was then... I would think that online fish sellers (petsolutions.com in this case) would ship them out as soon as they get mature enough, wouldn't you? So could be her first brood, might not be. But she is humongous!! Vent is open, and she's had about 4 that we've seen come out, most have been eaten before they hit the gravel.

Is she in a community tank? The stress of other fish all around her looking for a meal, coupled with the fact this may be her first brood could be producing enough stress that the fry are being still born. I've only had one platy give birth in a community tank and she was so stressed that only a few of the fry even came out alive and then I was only able to save two of those. Not too long after that, mom platy died as well. I sure hope your platy pulls through!

She's in a 10g "maternity ward" tank with plants and rock structures and 3 other pg platies. There are a few juvie mollies in there that I wanted to separate from the "big tank" for a bit, as well as a completely spastic algae eater (most hyper thing I've seen in a while). Overall, likely as peaceful or more so than the big community tank - maybe it's just the stress of it being her first time that has caused this. I hope she makes it. Wonder if some melafix would help settle her down a bit - seems to calm others down at times (or maybe it was just a co-incident). I'm open to suggestions here - sure don't want to loose her.

Well at least with lights out, she's settled down for the night. Guess I'll see in the morning if she's "unloaded" them all or if she's even made it. Wish her luck!

Well, she made it thru the night, but still very, very pregnant. She's not hyper yet this morning, but we've only had the tank lights on for about 15 minutes. Breakfast will be bloodworms today in hopes that a meaty meal will help somehow. Has anyone else had a platy that has trouble getting everyone to leave mommy?? If so, was there anything that you did, or could have done, to help her along? She was SO miserable yesterday, we'll see what today holds... Ideas??

I've had the same thing happen to a molly..she pulled though..but for some odd reason she seems to have a problem with her swim bladder now

If she seems much more comfortable without the light on, it won't hurt anything to leave it off for the day... especially if the tank is in a room with natural daylight.
