I have a 29 tall tank, have one firemouth, and would like to put in some buddies for him/her soon. What do you sugest as good tank mates ? we are still cycling so we wil not add any to soon , just have one firemouth ( baby) its in its third week of cycling, I also notinced the tank is a bit cloudy, I did a 25% water change, is this ok? snd how often do I do water changes on a new tank?

do you have a test kit? if not, you should get one so you can test your water during and after the cycle.

cloudy wate rmeans that there is a bacterial bloom in the water.
no no test kit, the fish shop ran out and still does not have any in stock. ( I live in a very small town, one pet store :(
so what do I do with the bloom? we did a water change again today.

In my opinion, water changes will be the best thing for you to do about the bacterial bloom. They occur in your tank when there are too many nutrients in the water to support the bacteria, in this case, not the bacteria you are looking to keep around. The best thing to do is remove the food from the water that these bacteria need to thrive. Make sure that you are not over feeding your fish and do regular substrate cleaning with a siphon vaccum. The less decaying food and organic matter in your tank, the better. This is going to be somewhat hard for you to do though since you are fishy cycling so you may have to wait it out.

Without having a test kit right now, I would do water changes very frequently to avoid hurting your firemouth or having it die from ammonia or nitrtite poisoning. This will also help to keep the bacteria bloom at bay, but will slow down the cycle a little bit because you are removing ammonia and nitrites from the tank that otherwise would be a source of food for good bacteria. It is a give and take sort of thing when cycling with fish so be patient.

Awsome info thank you so much!! I did clean the subtrate, I also shut the light off to slow down the bloom. I will be patient. thank you so much. I do not over feed the firemouth, bu I will feed only once a day now until the tank is done cycling. thank you very much for some good info :)

Hi,

When you figure out if its a male or a female, get it a mate. They are soooo much fun to whatch when they are raising babies!

Just order the testkit - they're 1/2 the LFS price at DrsFoster&Smith, BigAls etc. Even w/ shipping, you save.

Once cycle is done, I suggest a bit if a cleaning crew. W/ Firemouths, shrimp are probably out, but you could get some otos or corys.
