I've decided that I completly went wrong while aquascaping my tank which is up and running with fish in it. I would like to re-aquascape pretty much the entire thing (it has fake plants).

Can I do this with my fish in it or do I have to take them out?

Does anyone have any tips on how to design a tank properly?

Here is a pic of my tank......I don't have any focal point or any real order in the tank.....I would like to use everything I have and if needed I could maybe get a few more things.....Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, if you really want to re-use all the stuff in there - I would move the two tall plants in the middle over into the left hand corner behind the barrel. This will balence with the other side more which has a taller, more massive rock thing (? - is that a fake rock cave?)
Maybe pull the barrel foward and right a little to make room.

I wouldn't put more stuff in there, it will look too crowded. Balance between right and left instead of a "centerpiece" object. With the middle opened up, the fish can become more of the focal point.

Also, consider changing the background to a solid - maybe black. The tank will look less busy and the ornaments and fish that you have now will stand out more. And the blue gravel will really pop!

Hope this helps - post again when you redo!

I think it looks good as is.

Maybe the cave thing in the center and the plants more bunched up. You can move stuff around with the fish in there, but as posted before, just be careful that you do not bury any fish or pin them under or against anything.

I move my fake plants around once in a while. mostly when vacuuming gravel.

Nice tank, I think it looks good.

edit:

I think some flat rocks like in the backgound would look cool in the tank.
