First of all, I think this is a great forum, lots of friendly people and useful information. I had an aquarium about 10 years ago with fish that, as I think back to it now, survived for a long time on pretty much dumb luck. So now I'm thinking of starting a new tank and want to get things going on the right foot.
I plan on getting a 29 gallon tank with the following fish:
5 Bronze Corys
2 Dwarf Gouramis
8 Neon tetras
Is this going to be too much? I would get a bigger tank but I'm kind of limited with money and space.

It looks fine except you'll want to get a male/female pair of gouramis as two males of any anibantoid species can lead to aggresion issues. However, you'll probably have to order a female in, as most pet stores don't stock females.

agreed

Although gouramis are semi-aggressive and very territorial, you have enough room that they might be ok toogether. It's a plus that you're not considering any other semi-aggressive species. If you have your heart set on gouramis just make sure that you have plenty of hiding spaces and get two that are the SAME SIZE! If you get one that is much larger he will definitely stress the smaller one to death. I had two dwarfs in a 20 long and as long as they had their own territory they were good. JME HTH!

Thanks for all the replies. I din't have my heart set on Gouramis, I really wanted the neon tetras and bronze corys because that's what I had in the old tank. I just wanted a larger fish to "fill up" the tank. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

On another note, I was looking at power filters and the Aquaclear 50 looked promising. Is it going to provide enough filtration by itself (rated for 30-50 gallon tanks)?

I would say it would be ok, but I would get a powerhead for circulation. You don't want any dead spots.
