Optimum Flow Rate?

Working on setting up a 100g freshwater tank. Going to have a DIY sump/wet-dry with about 5 gallons of bio media.

Question is, does anyone know the ideal flow rate for optimal bacteria growth in bio media for a FW tank? I can't seem to get a conclusive answer.

Well, you'll want to turn over the tank about 3 to 5 times and hour anyway. As long as the media is wet, it probably doesn't matter about the actual flow rate of water in the media. Bacterial population will be regulated by available ammonia and nitrite. Oxygen will be freely available regardless of flow rate.

So with a ~400 litre tank you will want to pump about 1200-2000 l/hr to get adequate turnover.
