I want to upgrade my freshwater tank to at least a 20 gallon(but hopefully a 55) and that will leave me with the ten gallon

I would kind of like goldfish

What kind should I get? Whats the smallest kind that would work in a ten gallon?

That's like under 40 litres so no, not really enough. I'd go as small as maybe 60 litres with a fancy, but even that is pushing it. Others would say that was way too small and that you need more like 100-120litres for one goldfish.

And even then you would need extra filtration as whatever was on the tank before wouldn't be enough for goldfish.

So probably better getting something else for the 10g...

Of course 90% or more of the goldfish out there probably live (and die) in a lot less, but we try and do the right thing when we know better :) My sister kept 2 goldfish for about 3 years in a container that was less than 20 litres (5g) with no filter, but that doesn't mean it's a good way to keep them...

oh..well there goes that plan

okay new question

Can two goldfish go into a 55 gallon(and what are the dimentions of a 55 gallon?)

You could put 3 fancy goldfish into a 55G tank. But they would probably be the only residents and you would have to have some major filtration. 55G is 4ft x 1 ft I'm not sure on the height though.

Well could I start with2 goldfish in a ten gallon(two filters) and as they grow I can be getting a new 55 gallon ready(how fast do they grow?)
How much would an underground filter strong enough for 2 goldfish in a 55 cost?

No you would probably want a canister and one or two Power filters on the 55 gallon. Gold fish grow realatively fast so you would need to get the tank up and running quick. Around here you can pick up a 55 gallon hood and stand for under 200. Buy the filters online you will save a fortune. www.bigalsonline.com and www.petsmart.com are the two cheapest online retailers.

There is one good and bad thing about fish keeping. A lot of people get into it, kill a bunch of fish, then get out. This is bad as they probably didn't get good advice and got burnt. But the good side is you can pick up cheap tanks pretty much whenever you want. There are always tanks available at low prices, you just need to look around. If you are planning ahead and taking your time, you can get lots of good bargains.

And you have to buy some things online. Filters and stuff cost way too much at many LFS.

And we have 2 large canisters on our 220l / 60g goldfish tank. The one (oversized) filter wasn't enough even though they are small at the moment.

Try checking out craigslist for some good local deals if you're in the states. There's lots of used stuff on there, but at least you can go onsite and check its condition. I've even seen posts from people giving entire setups away on there.
