So I am getting a new tank for christmas!! It is a seamless 90g tank, with a top filter in the hood. So after it is set-up and cycled, I will be adopting friends blood parrot (he is 2 1/2 inchs, currently in her 20g tank, which is the reason I will be adopting him!). I have researched what would work and came up with a mixed list....
T-Bar Cichlid
Blue Dempsey***
Jack Dempsey
Convict***
Fire Mouth Cichlid***
Flag Cichlid, Festivum
Geophagus's
Ram***
Severum***
Angels***
(The ones with the stars I really like!)
The personality of the bp is hard to say because he?? is in a 20g, and did attack/ kill??? the other bp she had, but that could be do to the size of tank?? They were the only fish in this tank.
Now it is time to narrow it down, but I am not sure what would be the best setup. So I need some ideas/help...
What would work the best?
What are good dither fish to put in the tank?
Set-up wise...
Will this type of filter work or should I think about getting another one??
Would gravel or sand be best?
Flowerpots or stacked slate??

Any ideas/help would be much appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Chantell

you could go either way, an agressive tank

or a semi agressive tank

for an agressive tank

jack dempsey(electric blue or reg)
t-bar
convict
firemouth
severum

for a semi

angels
rams
geos
festivums

and then you can add some cry cats, and some nice schooling tetras

for setups..you really wouldnt be able to put much in a 90 with big fish, maybe some rocks

for a semi..seeing as how the choices would be american cichlids, an amazion type setup will work

lots of branches and broad leafed plants as well as some grassy plants

im a big fan of sand, especially if you have catfish, it had a calming look to it and is more natural

i would go with the semi, because the tank is only a 90, you wont be able to add many big fish to it, and sevs, tbars and dempseys get fairly large

Thank for the advice!!!
I was thinking semi too, not sure about all the big fish in this size tank.
I am alittle worried about putting a ram in because i heard they were quite docile.
I have seen some very nice amazon setups, I would enjoy that!
Did you mean cory or catfish?
Thanks again

for a 90 gallon, you should go with a gold severum, angel, the blood parrot, and a festivum.

rams are to small and will get bulied by the "big boys" of the tank

angels are pretty bold, but if you want dither fish, some larger tetras like black skirt or red eye will do nicely in a school of 12

as for the filter, it totally depends on the filter you have now. do you know what kind it is and how many gallons per hour it puts out?

I agree with the reccomendation on the agressive except if you get a JD get the regular JD and try to get a male. More dominant personality. Some wouldn't even recommend a regular JD, DO NOT put a EBJD in a tank with a blood parrot. It will get bullied constantly. EBJDs are timid fish and do not do well with overly agressive tank mates.

If you want aggressive, I would go 2 T-barbs, 2 severums, the bloodparrot, and 1 or 2 convicts.

Then you can add some raphs to keep the bottom of the tank clean.

A JD in general yes, but not an EBJD. They are almost shy in their behavior.

rams can hold their own in a tank with angels, i've always kept them with angels, never had a problem

blood parrots are not agressive at all. there are acctually one or the most docile cichlids. it will probably be the other way around, with the blood parrot getting harassed by the JD
I beg to differ I have seen a lot of nasty BP's. They seem to have a thing with biteing perhaps because there mouth is deformed. Unless there is some dithers and hide outs the jack would be quite stressed and may well be harrased by a BP. One of the fish belived to be in the BP is the Red Devil which is where I think this personality comes from. Thankfully they are so deformed that if they do attack they tend to not inflict much damage at all because they can't really bite.
