Ok I know alot of you have shunned the use of Nutrifin Cycle and I thought I would give my thoughts on it after using it on a constant basis. As most you all know- I am going through a Fishy cycle and being here in Australia it is one of a few products we have available to us to complement to start of cycling. (No Bio Spira I'm afraid and no possibility of importing)

What do I think of Nutrafin Cycle after getting p**sed off at the whole fishy cycle thing and feeling I got nothing to loose. I dumped a whole bottle of it in as one of the forum members attested that it helped him skip the cycling part of it. With skeptism I did just that. Hay what the heck.

Although I don't have any formal testing methods and most of us don't, I am around 85 percent sure that Nutrafin Cycle does not do what it claims to do. I beleive it is a product of false advertising. I went to my LFS and had it out with them also. The seem to think that it works and they use it on a constant basis. They are more inclined to think that due to Australias strict false advertising laws it wouldn't have passed through the net if it didnt do what claimed to do. On the other hand I dont know if it did anything at all hence the 15 percent doubt. Like most of you here I am jumping on the band wagon and giving Cycle the boot.

So anyway I gave it the flick and went down to the much cheaper alternative Aquariam Pharmaceuticals "Stress Zyme". Hell using their ammo-lock did exactly what it claimed to do but with mixed feelings and causing a bit of stress.

After doing a 25 percent waterchange I dumped 60mls of Stress Zyme in. The next day I was extra surprised to see my tank crystal clear and all the fishys coming up to me and smiling  errr you get the picture. Now I am not to sure if it has increased the bacteria content but it sure has done something good. Deffinetly something that a whole bottle of Cycle couldn't do thats for sure. So I have decided to stick with Stress Zyme for now. As far as off the shelf bacteria is concerned I think Stress Zyme is a far better product than Cycle is if you live in an area that bio Spira is not available (such as me). I would like to get some opinions on Stress Zyme from other forum members and newbies alike as I am sure it has done something good
for me? Anybody else used it? So fire away......

i will also recommend seachem stability. it uses stronger strains of bacteria diffferent from traditional ones, and as they are stored in a spore state, they can be stored without refrigiration for 4 years. the (facultative/anaerobic) bacteria can also perform denitrification under the right conditions. it'll help avoid spikes as long as fishes are added slowly(around 3 at a time). even in totally anaerobic conditions, the bacteria won't produce hydrogen sulphide as they are non-sulphur fixing.

the overwhelming concensus on these bacteria in a bottle products is that except for Biospira, none of them are worth your time or money. they simply do not work.

I tried a few of these bottled products a couple of years ago in some private tests and found they did little to nothing. I tried cycle and stress zyme and a couple of the dried spore products and found none that really got the cycle going any quicker.

With multitanks, sure. You can cycle a tank up in a week if you have more than one tank :)

Well, I'm still cycling and I've used Stress Zyme and it didn't seem to work. I went to the LPS and someone there who has tanks said to try Tropical Science Nitromax. I've only used it for a few days so I don't know how it works yet. If this doesn't work I'm ordering the Biospira.

Cycling sucks so F***ing much :rant2:

One things for sure my tank has never been so crystal clear. It is amazing and looks very nice. It is all due to using Stress Zyme. It must also have a clearing agent mixed in with it.

i had the complete opposite experience with Nutrafin Cycle and Bio-Spira. I did two different doses of Bio-Spira and had no luck with my cycle. the guy at the LFS kept telling me to use teh Nutrafin Cycle and i never did b/c of all the naysayers on this forum (don't get me wrong, i still trust everyone's input). finally, after 6 weeks of HIGH nitrites, i broke and bought a bottle. i added it for 3 days and in 3 days i was down to 0ppm nitrites and 10ppm nitrates. i also did a 20% water change on the third day. i don't know which was the contributing factor to my nitrites coming down but i'm not going to argue with success. i also was using Seachem's Stability with no luck. Nutrafin Cycle seemed to do it for me. i guess with every product you have people who like it and people who hate it.

I tried Cycle, and it did not do anything for me.

I think it's either:

1. Biospira, if you don't get a bad batch.

2. Gravel or filter material from an established, disease-free tank.

3. Patience.

The nitrifying bacteria are everywhere, it's just a matter of growing an adequate concentration.
