Its horrible. I live in Yarmouth, N.S, Canada. I went to Wal-Mart one day to check out they're new fish department. They had Angels in with... you guessed it... fish that were AGRESSIVE and eating their fins so they couldnt move, then eating off they're scales and eyes for hours before they died. When there was a person for that department, theyed scoop out the 5-8 dead ones so the starving agressives would go after more!! We told a guy who worked there and he admitted he knew NOTHING about them, but he would talk to ''Shana''. ''Shana'' told him to tell me to ''Don't touch the fish''. They also had half-rotten aqua plants. So here they are with 25 hermit crabs across from the fish, next day all dead except 1, then NEXT day theyre sellin the dead crab's shells!! Disease? Poison? omg... :mad2: :rant2: ... Anyway, I finally tell this woman whos just helping lift something before she goes to another apartment and shes like ''Holy crap thats terrible!!'' and puts the remaining ( 5/25 from 2 days) with some peaceful neons and glo-lights. I was at least a little happy then. a week or 2 later, I go and theres no sign for what may have been firemouth cichlids, and so I ask her and she says ''Theyre the same as those ones'' and she indicates Red Zebra Cichlids, bright orange fish while the tiny 1.5'' Firemouths or whatever they were had a hint of orange on their chins, but otherwise was all gray and white!! Then the woman looks at a gourami and says ''I think he's sick!!'' and puts him in one of they're three-inch-tall betta bowls with about 2 inchs of water, so the poor little guy cant move, and she tells everyone ''He's dieing!!''... makes me wanna sue the idiots... grrrr... and i'm sad for the fish...

i know its like that everywhere and all the forums im in there is lots of threads like this.. maybe we should do something, like make a pation for a law where you cant sell fish unless you have a trained person on hand  ?

Good idea!! Actually, my 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son know more bout fish then them... heh heh... daughter has a 3 gallon tank for her 3 female bettas, and my son has a 15 gallon for breeding brine and ghost shrimp for our bigger tank and the pet store.

I don't know about Canada but here in the U.S. Walmart is supposed to stop selling fish at their stores after the first of the year. I think that will solve a lot of those problems at least for Wal mart. It will not stop what seems to go on in almost any fish store. There are always people there that will sell you anything even if you don't need it. You just have to look for someone in these stores that do know what they are talking about. They are out there and I am one of them.( I work in a very nice fish store). However, I am only one person and I can't be there all of the time. Try as I may to help educate people on proper fish care it is not always possible to do this with everyone.

OMG! Walmart stop selling fish? That would be great. It's hard watching some of the fish (especially the betta) struggle.

This might be a bit of a shock to some people but all 3 of the walmarts around here take good care of their fish. They all stopped selling Pacus here about a month ago. They even have people who actually know a thing or 2 about fish. They still use the inch per gallon rule though but at least the fish are in decent health in the store now.

Yea, they are getting pretty old. But I'm the kind of person who hates repetitiveness. If that's even a word. I guess redundancy would be a better word choice.

I read on the internet a couple of years ago that some marine biologists "PROVED" that fish indeed to have a complete spinal system and totally feel pain. It was a news item. I have no idea whether or not there are laws in place to protect fish from abuse, however. There should be if there aren't.

Doesn't anything that struggles while it's 'dying', whether it be a crab caught by a fish (or whatever eats it), or a fish being eaten by another fish, feel pain? IMO, I think it does.
And where did this info about Wal-Mart stopping the sale of fish come from?

Wal mart not selling fish after the first of the year is more then just a rumor. I work in a nice fish shop and this is the information we have been given to date. I am taking it as the truth and I hope that it is.

Is it just me, or are these Walmart/LFS bashing threads getting old? i think theyre getting old too, but this is the first one in a short while... a couple of weeks ago all that was in the general chit-chat section were anti-walmert threads.
the good news is that most walmarts around the country will stop selling fish at the first of the year

I'm not positive my Walmart is getting rid of fish. I was in there last week and they have TONS of new equipment, food, supplies... Actually I was shocked. But if they do get rid of them.... I wonder what they will do with their tower display tanks.... hmmm. lol

I know this is gonna sound really stupid and i apologize, im a beginner at all of this, but what is the deal with the betta in the small cups of blue water...they are just stacked up on shelves and look an inch from death. like 50 of them. they cant possibly sell all those fish before they die. do they even feed them? i cant even bear looking at it. i keep hearing, oh well they dont need space. and i see it everywhere, petco, petsmart, walmart.

What idiots! At least my Walmarts not like that! I guess it really depends on the Walmart... usually they're bad, but once in a while you come across Walmarts that know what they're doing to some extent. But that is pathetic and sad.

Most managers don't have any clue as to whats going on in the store. If they do know they are not allowed to say yes or no, until an official release is made. Walmart is doing away with a lot of things trying to upgrade their image. They have already done away with layaway, and fabric will be the next to go. Why not add fish to the list? Up until the day the official release is made you will have articles like this.

I too have heard that fish will be gone by the begining of the year. I guess time will tell.

The Petsmart store near me does water changes daily on their Betas in the cups. And few of them die before being sold. They have done pretty well on getting order quantities right. What they haven't done very well is to train their folks which ones are crown tails. But at least the fish are healthy.

Whenever I go to wal-mart their fish are completely neglected-Not a single employee is taking care of them and they have a lot,a lot!, of dead, decaying fish. But the worst I've seen is Petco. It looks like they have literally hundreds of fish in one little 20 gallon tank; all the fish have room to do is barely move back and forth. And petsmart always has dead fish; whenever i used to get fish from their they would infect my tank with ich or gourami disease. All of these places need to get certified employees, not a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears teenagers running the place.

If wal-mart stops selling fish I will literally cry tears of utter joy.
even thought there are wal-marts that take good care of fish, I think that them selling fish is bad because it's sponsoring bad fishkeeping practices by putting fish right out there for people just to buy on a whim with no knowledge of keeping fish whatsoever.

Yeah get a life, how could you possibly choose not to vent about Walmart fish department, its a crying shame. They should be forced to stop selling them. But on the other side, they have entirely too much money and power, theres no chance of forcing Walmart to do anything. But having a place to vent is nice, so if you dont like the threads dont read them and dont reply!

Our wal-mart just came under new management. I found this out last week and checked out to see if she was doing anything with the fish dept. When I went in there there were signs on all the tanks "Tanks under treatment. Fish not for sale". I inquired about this and the fish guy there told me the manager was treating the tanks for all posible parisites and that would not be selling any fish 24 hours after arival. Why this realy is not enough time I am pleased to see that there is a decent manager. I asked to speak with her and had a small conversation. She seems very knowledgeable about fish and is duing all that she can to help get the fish in the best health posible. I have been told that water is tested daily now and changed when levels are out of wack. I am quite pleased at this and she has evan agreed to let me test water before I purchase any fish from this store. I don't know if I will be doing any fish product purchasing from there as even though this one store is doing their best the others are still treating badly. I asked her about this roomer and she said if it is true however very unlikely that there has been nothing said to anyone. I have heard this rummer was started by one employee and has spread out of controll. It sure is a small world if one person can have the world beleiving this quick. I will be writing to wal-mart head corters and letting them know what I think of this new manager and stating that there should be more following her example.

I was just in Walmart today and checked out the fish due to this post (Joliet, IL). one third of the tanks had Ick, and the other ones had dead fish, being eaten by other fish. Does someone have a letter or contact where we can start sending our concerns? Or know of a group we can join dedicated to this cause?
We can stop annoying those who hate redundancy by directing our anger into positive letter-writing energy :cool2:

Ok so i did alittle research myself. Here are two links to online petitions for those who oppose Walmart's fish abuse. You can sign them electronically, and click to send:
http://www.petitiononline.com/khaki/petition.html
http://www.gopetition.com/online/7823.html
If you prefer to write your letter and mail it, here are some guidelines with which to do so, and contact info of where to send:
http://www.petlibrary.com/goldfish/walmart.htm
"My inactions are a part of the injustice in the world, just as surely as the actions and inactions of others. Redirect your negative emotions toward creating positive change. Anger and frustration, channeled positively, can be an unstoppable energy force- loving action." Julia Butterfly Hill

I also agree with Mgamer20o0. As consumers, we have purchasing power. Every penny we spend is a vote for what we believe in. Too bad were preaching to the choir here... :duh:

One thing that bothers me is when people say they "rescued" a fish from Wal-Mart... when one "rescues" a fish from Wal-Mart, another 4 or 5 fish die to replace it so that somebody else can "come to the rescue".
Also, I think it depends on the Wal-Mart, although I believe the majority of the time they don't know what they are doing... However, I haven't really found any pet stores in my area that are really any better than Wal-Mart (no quarantines, sick and dead fish).

There is another site that is working on the big box fish stores, I thought Sully posted this here:
www.noclownsinacube.net
They have begun a letter writing campaign and have chosen Petsmart to start with, but I believe the plan to expand to other retailers. Check it out.
And yeah..the Wallmart sucks threads are done to death. Maybe just make one stickie that says big box fish stores suck and people can post in that...or threads can be moved there. Then they don't clutter up the place.
