Previously, I've used rocks from a nearby field/ditch, etc to decorate an aquarium, before hand I pressure washed them and then threw them in. Didn't seem to have any negative effect on the tank.

Anyone done similar things? If so, what methods did you use to clean/sterlize them before adding them to your tank?

i use shale from a pennsylvania quarry. i like the redish look. i rinse them under warm water, scrum 'em with a brush and that's it.

I've soaked them in warm water w/a little bleach then scrubbed them and soaked them in water w/water conditioner to remove bleach and rinsed them and put them in. But I have wondered if ther is any effects on the fish I've been kind of hesitant to use to much just in case

I do the scrub thing too, with a little clorox. Then I pour a little vinegar on them and look to see if the bubble or sizzle a little. If they do, I dont use them. Then I stick em in a pot of boiling water, then they are ready.

We have great rock in the farm creek--it's flat and multi-sized. Solid--I bake it in the oven or boil, dependng on humidity. Never have had one crack, and they do quite well in the tanks. Stack, cave, etc. :)
