Not, "How to treat" but, "what's the cause?"

Some of my fish (few platy's, molly's and a gold) have been glancing, crashing on the bottom and have some ich spots. I understand how and why i should treat the illnesses but I don't understand what is causing the problem. The water conditions are as follows.

Nitrates 0
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 10-20
water Temp 75.6 farenheit

Any help would be great.

Ich is a parasite that is brought in on new fish. It is not caused by bad water conditions, or failure to maintain an appropriate enviroment for your fish. Bad water conditions and an inappropriate enviroment can stress the fish and weaken there immune system making them more susceptible to the effects of the ich parasite.

It is best to quarantine new fish before adding them to your main tank to prevent infecting all of your fish with a disease/parasite.

I am sorry. What I meant to say was that if Ick was in the tank, constant temperature changes could stress the fish and let Ick attack the fish.

any kind of stress can and will weaken the fish's natural immune system, resulting in any opportunistic disease(s) present in the tank.

liv2padl,

What type of meds would your recommend for a general quarantine period? "General" meaning new fish from the LFS that have no signs of any parasites or problems.

Ich is directly caused by adding an infected fish to the tank. If ich is not introduced to the tank, your fish will not get ich. If ich is introduced to the tank, your fish have atleast a 95% chance of catching ich. So, if you don't want your fish to get ich, or any other potentialy worse parasites, quarantine all new arivals.

it's never a good idea to use drugs as a "preventative" measure. drugs are reasonably harsh in and of themselves and treating fish for a disease they do not have get's your new fish off to a stressful beginning in your tank.

rather than add drugs to a quarantine tank, simply keep the water ammonia and nitrite free, stress free and very low nitrate and DOC levels. "if" your fish succumb to a disease, treat that disease specifically.
